The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team started its spring season with a 6-1 victory over the University of Northwestern Ohio, a NAIA school, on Sunday in Lima, Ohio.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 2-0 on the season while the Racers drop to 2-2.
CWRU swept all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. At first doubles, first-years Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey won 6-1 over Jelena Lopicic and Neo Mafuyeka. Sophomore Pallavi Goculdas and first-year Madeleine Eiss followed with a 6-2 win over Veronika Kovalchuk and Ana Sofia Marquez at second doubles. At third doubles, sophomore Katherine Wang and first-year Radha Patel prevailed over Ana Cetina and Dayana Morejon 6-4.
Patel started singles play with a win at fifth singles over Morejon, winning the first set 6-1 and leading the second 2-0 before Morejon retired. Kassaie, ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III national singles rankings, did not lose a point at first singles, defeating Lopicic 6-0, 6-0. Eiss clinched the Spartans victory with a win at third singles, defeating Kovalchuk 6-1, 6-1. At fourth singles, Goculdas defeated Marquez 6-2, 6-3.
McCloskey battled Cetina at second singles, but ultimately fell in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 8-10, while sophomore Chloe Ku bested Mafuyeka 7-5, 5-7, 10-6 at sixth singles.
Case Western Reserve returns home next Saturday to face Kenyon College with action slated to start at 4:30 p.m.
