CWRU Men's 400-Yard Medley Relay Sets School Record at Second Day of UAA Championships

Performances from the Case Western Reserve University men's 400 medley relay team and junior swimmer Abby Halsdorfer highlighted the second day of competition at the 2022 University Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Junior swimmers Connor Chignell and Anatole Borisov, sophomore swimmer Ethan Chuang, and first-year swimmer Jackson Pollard combined to set a new school record in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing in a time of 3:22.25. The time bests the previous record of 3:22.88 set at the 2014 UAA Championships. The Spartans finished sixth in the event.

Halsdorfer earned the top finish of any individual CWRU swimmer on day two of the meet, placing fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.45. She advanced to the 'A' finals with a time of 5:02.49 in the prelims.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Pollard, junior Campbell Patterson, and seniors Ryan Gilbert and Calvin Tecson finished sixth with a time of 1:23.86. Chuang also placed 23rd in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing in 1:54.45.

First-year swimmer Peter Meng placed 14th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:33.33, while first-year Stephen Hogeman placed 20th in the same event with a time of 4:35.71. Junior Andrew Smith finished the 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.75, placing 24th in the event.  

In the three-meter diving event, first-year diver Nico Billoni placed 11th with a mark of 372.65, first-year diver Alex Waltman placed 15th with a mark of 319.30, and senior diver Mark Fox placed 16th with a mark of 303.45.

Both 'A' Spartan relay teams for the women's swimming and diving team finished sixth in their events. The 200-yard freestyle relay, consisting of first-year swimmers Gabriella ChambersKate MenzerAngeli Paull, and Simone Vale, finished in a time of 1:37.22, while the 400-yard medley relay of Chambers, Menzer, and first-year swimmers Erica Rice and Caroline Schlessman finished in a time of 3:55.04. Menzer also took 11th in the 200-yard IM, finishing with a time of 2:07.88, while Rice placed 23rd in the same event with a time of 2:11.10.

Individually, first-year Isabel Verheyen placed 19th in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:10.31, while first-year Simone Vale placed 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 24.50 seconds.

After two days of competition, the 20th-ranked Spartan women's swimming and diving team is in sixth place in the team standings with 250 points. The 17th-ranked CWRU men's swimming and diving team is in seventh place in the team standings with 184 points after one day of competition.

The UAA Championships continue on Friday with preliminary action slated to start at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:00 p.m. Events on day three include the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, and 800-yard freestyle relay. In addition, the women's three-meter dive competition will take place, with preliminary dives starting at 12:45 p.m. and finals beginning at 5:30 p.m.
