Box Score The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team celebrated Senior Day with a three-set sweep over the College of Wooster, 25-15, 25-13, 25-14, on Saturday afternoon inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 21-4 overall and finished the season a perfect 8-0 at home. CWRU also extended its winning streak to a season-high eight matches. The Fighting Scots fell to 7-15 on the season.
Sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia led the team with both 11 kills and 11 digs, her third consecutive match with at least 10 of each, and added four service aces. Senior outside hitter Meara Reeder had seven kills, and first-year outside hitter Kalli Wall recorded six kills, all of which came in the first set. Sophomore setter Ansley Yamaato had a team-high 18 assists and added 10 digs, with senior setter Sara Rogers contributing 13 assists and five digs.
The Spartans started the match with an 11-3 run. Wooster then cut its deficit to four, 13-9, with a 6-2 run. CWRU responded with an 8-2 run to lead by 10, 21-11. Following two Fighting Scot points, kills by Wall and senior outside/right side hitter Gianna Lambert and a Wooster ball handling error put the Spartans one point away from winning the set. After two Wooster points, junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo clinched the set with a kill.
A 9-1 Spartan run in the middle of the second set put the hosts up 20-8. Marfatia recorded kills on four consecutive points in the middle of the run to keep the serve with CWRU. Later, she closed the set with two consecutive service aces to give Case Western Reserve a 2-0 lead in the match.
Leading 9-7 in the third set, the Spartans won nine consecutive points to take a commanding 11-point lead. After Wooster cut its deficit to eight, a kill by Rogers, a service ace from sophomore defensive specialist Hannah Fox, and a kill by Marfatia clinched the match for CWRU.
Prior to the match, the Spartans honored their five graduating team members—Lambert, Reeder, Rogers, senior middle blocker Eve Dornback, and junior defensive specialist Lindsay Schamp—with a Senior Day ceremony.
Case Western Reserve will wrap up its regular season with the University Athletic Association Championship on Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5 in Brooklyn, New York. The Spartans, seeded fifth in the tournament, will face fourth-seeded Emory at 2 p.m. on Friday. The winner will face the winner of the match between top-seeded NYU and eighth-seeded Brandeis at 4 p.m. in the semifinals with the other two teams facing off at 6 p.m. in the consolation semifinals.
