The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team's run in the main draws of the ITA Fall Regional Championship at the Tao and Dwight Davis Tennis Centers in St. Louis, Missouri ended on Saturday with doubles losses in the round of 16 and singles losses in the quarterfinals.
Sophomores Lily McCloskey and Hannah Kassaie both advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw with three-set wins in the round of 16. McCloskey, seeded fourth in the draw, bested ninth-seeded Nina Moravek of Washington University in St. Louis 7-6 (10-8), 2-6, 6-3. Kassaie, seeded second in the draw, defeated the University of Chicago's Brooke Pedersen 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-3. However, in the final matches of the day, both Spartans fell to University Athletic Association opponents. McCloskey lost to eighth-seeded Nicole Geller from Chicago 4-6, 1-6, while Kassaie dropped a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 3-6 decision to Karen Gao from WashU.
Kassaie and McCloskey competed as a partnership in the main doubles draw, but the second-seeded duo fell 2-8 in its first match on Saturday in the round of 16 to ninth-seeded Perene Wang and Claudia Ng of Chicago. The ninth-seeded pair of sophomore Radha Patel and first-year Katalina Wang also dropped their round of 16 match, losing to fourth-seeded Gao and Eliana Hanna 3-8.
In the consolation singles bracket Wang and Patel faced each other in the quarterfinals after both winning in the round of 16. Patel prevailed 6-2, 6-3 to reach the consolation semifinals on Sunday.
In the "B" draw of the singles bracket, first-year Elsa Syed and junior Chloe Ku each won in the semifinals of the "blue" bracket to face each other in the finals. Ku won the match and the bracket by a score of 7-5, 5-7, 25-23. Also, first-year Asha Shukla went 2-0 on the day to win the "red" consolation bracket.
The ITA Regional Championships conclude on Sunday with doubles action starting at 10 a.m. ET.
