Miller Sets School Single-Game Block Record in Spartans' Loss to Rochester

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University first-year forward Evie Miller came off the bench to block a program-record seven shots, but her defensive effort was not enough for the Spartans on Sunday afternoon in a 75-62 loss to the University of Rochester at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The loss was the second-straight for the Spartans, who fell to 6-10 overall on the season and to 1-4 in University Athletic Association play. Rochester raised its season record to 11-5 overall with a 3-2 conference record.

Miller's seven blocks broke the school record of six that had previously been achieved seven times in program history, including earlier this season by sophomore forward Kayla Characklis. Miller added four rebounds and an assist in her 19 minutes off the bench in the game.

Characklis led all CWRU players with 15 points in the game, shooting seven-of-13 from the floor, while collecting eight rebounds, a block and a steal. Junior guard/ forward Isabella Mills finished the contest with 14 points and nine rebounds, and junior guard McKenna Gross came off the bench to score 10 for CWRU on Sunday.

The Spartans fell behind early on Sunday and trailed 26-12 by the end of the first quarter. However, trailing by as many as 19 in the second period, CWRU battled back, cutting the lead back to single digits by the end of the frame after threes on back-to-back possessions by first-year guard/ forward Lucy Vanderbeck, and trailed 39-30 heading into halftime.

Characklis opened the second half with baskets on the Spartans' first two possessions that got the team to within five points by the 8:35 mark, 39-34, but a 14-2 run by the Yellowjackets extended their lead back to 17 with 2:29 to play in the third, and Rochester led by 13, 55-42 at the end of the period. CWRU again trimmed the Rochester lead back to single digits on a layup by Gross with 3:19 to play that made the score 68-59, but that would be as close as the Spartans would get the rest of the way.

The Spartans shot 34.7% from the floor (26-of-75) during the game and ended the contest with a 46-37 edge over the Yellowjackets in rebounds.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action next weekend, continuing their four-game home stand against the University of Chicago on Friday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m.
