The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving teams split a dual meet against SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon in Geneseo, New York, with the women defeating the Knights 157-143 and the men falling to the hosts 186-114.
With the win, the Spartan women, ranked 19th in Division III, improve to 4-0 overall on the season, while the men, ranked 16th, drop to 2-2. Both the SUNY Geneseo men (now 4-0) and women (2-2) received votes in the latest CSCAA Top-25.
The women's team battled throughout the meet but needed a win in the 400 free relay to clinch the victory. First-years Simone Vale, Angeli Paull, Gabriella Chambers, and Isabel Verheyen claimed the top spot in the event with a time of 3:40.24.
Spartan women finished first in six other events. First-year Elishka Bailey took the top spot in both the 100 back with a time of 1:01.03, and 200 back with a time of 2:08.99. First-year Kate Menzer won the 100-yard fly in 1:00.11 while Vale grabbed first in the 50 free (25.42) and Paull won the 200 free (2:01.35).
In the diving events, first-year Abigail Wilkov won the 1-meter dive with a score of 242.25.
The men's team tallied wins in five events. The 400 free relay team of first-years Jackson Pollard and Peter Meng and juniors Campbell Patterson and Andrew Smith took the top spot with a time of 3:13.76. Meng also added a win in the 200 breast in 2:11.07. Junior Xander Guerrero won the 1,000-yard free in 10:01.30 and 500-yard free in 4:52.31, while first-year Stephen Hogeman won the 200 free with a time of 1:47.78.
The Spartans will head to Gambier, Ohio next Saturday, January 22, to face Kenyon College (ranked first in the women's top-25 and fourth in the men's) and Ohio Northern University. The first races are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
