Spartans' Season Ends in Singles & Doubles Quarterfinals

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team's 2021 campaign came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as sophomore James Hopper suffered a loss in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Singles Championships, and later fell in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Doubles Championships with teammate Matthew Chen.

Hopper's singles tournament run ended in the quarterfinals, where he suffered a three-set loss in a grueling match against Williams College's Arturo Kam, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4. After splitting the first two sets, including a closely played tiebreaker in the second set, Hopper, seeded second in the draw, fought off four match points trailing 5-4 in the third set, before eventually succumbing to his opponent on the fifth match-winning attempt.

Hopper's singles campaign ended with a 14-2 overall record.

In Saturday's doubles quarterfinals, Hopper and Chen, who were the top-seeded duo entering the tournament, fell in three sets to Brandeis' Jeffrey Chen and Adam Tzeng. The Spartans won the first set with an 8-6 tiebreaker, overcoming a 4-1 deficit in the set, and scoring the final four points of the tiebreak. However, CWRU failed to close out the second set after leading 3-0 and 5-3 and dropped a tiebreaker 7-4. The Judges ran away with the third set, winning 6-1 to pick up the match victory.

The doubles loss was just the second ever by the duo against a Division III opponent, as the two finished the year with a 12-1 doubles record together, and a 36-3 record together all-time.

By virtue of winning matches on the first day of the tournament, both Hopper and Chen assured themselves All-America honors for the 2021 campaign. It marks the second-straight season that the duo have secured All-America acclaim.
