Case Western Reserve University broke three school records and notched four NCAA 'B' cut times during the final day of competition at the Magnus Cup Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State University, at the Busbey Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio.
First-years Michael Butler and Peter Meng each led the men on Saturday, as both notched 'B' cut times in the 1,650-yard freestyle. In addition, Butler set a new school record in the event as he placed fourth with a time of 15:47.83. That time bests the previous school record of 15:54.06 set by former Spartan Drew Hamilton in 2015. Meng finished sixth in the event with a 'B' cut time of 15:54.41, while junior Xander Guerrero earned a ninth-place finish in the event with a time of 16:22.67.
First-year Ethan Chuang claimed a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 'B' cut time of 2:03.14, while first-year Jiro Batt placed eighth with a time of 2:05.31.
The men's 400-yard freestyle relay team of first-year Jackson Pollard, junior Campbell Patterson, Meng and junior Andrew Smith earned a fourth-place finish, as they finished the event with a new school record time of 3:03.35. That time bests the previous school record of 3:03.87 set back in 2016. Pollard also broke the school record in the 100-yard freestyle as he led off the relay with a time of 45.88, which broke the previous school record of 46.04 set by senior Calvin Tecson in 2020. In addition, Pollard added an eighth place in the 100-yard freestyle earlier in the day with a time of 46.21.
Other top finishers for the Spartan men were junior Kelvin Tay (sixth, 1:53.09) and senior Ryan Gorman (eight, 1:54.04) in the 200-yard backstroke, junior Anatole Borisov (fifth, 24.17) in the 50-yard backstroke and Smith (fifth, 1:52.85) in the 200-yard butterfly.
For the women, junior Abby Halsdorfer led the Spartans in the 1,650-yard freestyle as she placed 14th with a 'B' cut time of 17:32.80. Junior Johanna Pearson added a 20th-place finish in the event with a time of 17:48.29.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of first-year Gabriella Chambers, first-year Simone Vale, junior Maria Pritchett and first-year Isabel Verheyen also earned a 14th-place finish, as they finished the event with a time of 3:31.65.
Other top finishers for the Spartan women on Saturday included first-year Liz Cao (13th, 1:01.60) in the 100-yard individual medley, first-year Elishka Bailey (20th, 2:06.39) in the 200-yard backstroke, first-year Erica Rice (20th, 2:29.00) in the 200-yard breaststroke and first-year Kate Menzer (21st, 2:08.13) in the 200-yard butterfly.
The men finished third at the meet with 956 points, while the women placed ninth with 182 points. Cleveland State finished first on the men's side with 1,859 points, and the University of Akron placed first on the women's side with 1,769.50 points.
The Spartans will be off from competition for almost two months, before opening the 2022 portion of the schedule on January 15th, as they face SUNY-Geneseo.
