Box Score Case Western Reserve University senior Abbey Lawrence scored 20 points to lead all Spartans and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the SpringHill Suites Tip-Off Tournament in Washington, Pennsylvania, but CWRU suffered a 79-74 loss to Denison University on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, CWRU fell to 2-4 on the year, while Denison improved to 1-3.
Lawrence recorded her third-straight game with 20 or more points scored, and it was her fifth 20-point effort through six games this season. During the team's three games last week, she averaged 32.0 points per game, and is averaging 26.0 points per contest overall this season. Lawrence, who shot six-of-20 in the game and four-for-seven from three-point range, also led all CWRU players on Saturday with seven rebounds, while adding three assists and two steals.
Also scoring in double figures on Saturday were junior Isabella Mills with 13 points, and sophomore Margaret Terry, who came off the bench to score 12.
CWRU jumped out to an early 9-3 lead with 7:39 left in the opening quarter after a three by Mills and a layup off a steal by junior McKenna Gross. The Big Red responded with a 9-0 run of their own to take the lead and went ahead 18-14 with 2:09 left in the first quarter, before a 6-0 run to close the period gave CWRU a 20-18 lead heading into the first break. Denison pulled away late in the first half, and would carry an eight-point advantage, 39-31, into halftime.
The Spartans cut into Denison's lead in the third quarter, and took the lead, 49-48, on a three-pointer by Mills with 4:13 left in the third. CWRU maintained a lead for the remainder of the period, and a three-pointer by Lawrence to close the frame gave the team a 61-55 advantage after three quarters. CWRU built its lead to a game-high nine points, when Mills put back an offensive rebound with 5:34 to play to put the Spartans in front 69-60. But, Denison closed the game out on a 19-5 run, tying the contest at 71-71 with 2:01 left, and taking the lead for good with 1:12 to play.
CWRU had a chance to tie the game late, but a missed three with 10 seconds left allowed the Big Red to secure the win.
Saturday's game concluded a stretch of five-consecutive road games for the Spartans. Case Western Reserve will return to Horsburgh Gym to begin a period of four-straight home games that will take them through the end of 2021, beginning with a matchup against Albion on Wednesday, November 24 at 6:00 p.m.
