Led by the duo of junior Jack Begley and senior Trey Razanauskas, the 27th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team notched a fifth-place finish at the 2021 University Athletic Association Championships, hosted by the University of Rochester at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, New York on Saturday morning.
Begley and Razanauskas became the first duo of Spartan runners to earn All-UAA First team honors (awarded to the top-seven finishers in the race) since Brian Casselberry and Steve Cullen accomplished the feat in 1994. Begley, who was in the top pack for the entire race and led for a period of time, finished fifth overall out of 78 total runners and crossed the finish line of the 8K race in a time of 25:46.5. Razanauskas followed close behind Begley, placing seventh overall with a time of 25:53.9.
It marked the second-straight season that Razanauskas has earned All-UAA First Team honors, after he placed fifth in 2019, and his third-straight year securing any All-UAA honor after placing 14th in 2018 to earn a spot on the second team. Begley, who was the top-finishing first-year runner in 2018, claimed the first All-UAA honor of his career with his finish on Saturday.
The Spartans third finisher was junior Robert St. Clair, who finished 34th overall with a time of 26:50.5, while senior Logan Singer finished 36th overall with a time of 26:53.9. First-year Aidan Nathan was the team's fifth and final scoring finisher, placing 40th overall with a time of 27:02.7.
Rounding out the Spartans' top-seven on Saturday were first-year Nate Gilbert, who crossed the finish line in 43rd place with a time of 27:08.6, and junior Liam O'Reilly, who placed 45th with a time of 27:13.6. Senior Alex Loeper (54th, 27:42.9), junior Jacob Conard (57th, 27:47.2) and junior Parker Straight (59th, 27:51.9) were additional finishers for CWRU at Saturday's conference championship meet.
The Spartans finished fifth out of the eight UAA teams at the meet with a score of 110. No. 17 Carnegie Mellon won the UAA Championship with a score of 47, followed by 13th-ranked WashU (59), 20th-ranked Chicago (63) and ninth-ranked Emory (94). Following the Spartans in the standings were Rochester (166), NYU (204) and Brandeis (252).
Chicago junior Henry Myers won the individual UAA Championship with a race-winning time of 25:39.0.
The Spartans will now turn their attention toward the 2021 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships in two weeks, on Saturday, November 13 in Shelbyville, Indiana. At the meet, Case Western Reserve will be aiming to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the third-straight season.
