The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving team hosted its first dual meet inside the Veale Natatorium since February 2020, as the Spartan women earned a 176-124 win over University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University, while the men suffered a 184-116 setback to the Tartans on Saturday afternoon.
The CWRU women now stand at 2-0 in dual meets this season, while the men are 1-1. Saturday's meet was the first dual meet of the season for Carnegie Mellon.
The Spartan women claimed first-place finishes in 12 of the 16 events on Saturday, including all but two of the swimming events. Junior Abby Halsdorfer, junior Maria Pritchett, first-year Simone Vale, and first-year Kate Menzer each won two individual events during the meet. Halsdorfer picked up a pair of victories in the distance free events, winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:44.68 and the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:15.09. Pritchett claimed wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.75) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.13). Vale secured first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.85 and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.20, and Menzer was the top finisher in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.00) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.03).
Other individual event winners for the CWRU women on Saturday included first-year Madison McDaniels in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.01) and first-year Gabriella Chambers in the 50-yard freestyle (24.43). The Spartans also won both relays, with first-year Erica Rice, McDaniels, first-year Nara Lee and Chambers winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.37, and Vale, first-year Adriana Kamor, Lee and Chambers winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:38.79.
On the men's side, the Spartans claimed victories in five individual events. First-year Peter Meng was triumphant in both the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:41.08 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:43.17. Junior Xander Guerrero locked in a victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:43.43, while first-year Kevin Hu topped the standings in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:54.13. In the 50-yard freestyle, CWRU junior Campbell Patterson pulled out a first-place finish with a time of 21.18 seconds.
The Spartans are slated to host another UAA opponent for a dual meet next weekend, when the University of Rochester will make the trip to Cleveland on Sunday, November 7. The meet is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
