29th-Ranked Spartans Earn 6-3 Win over Rochester (N.Y.)

The 29th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team earned its fifth victory of the 2020 season, defeating the University of Rochester (N.Y.), 6-3, at the Cleveland Skating Club on Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 5-4 on the year with the win, while Rochester dropped to 2-3.

CWRU started off the day strong, taking two of the three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 advantage over Rochester. Picking up doubles victories were the pairings of junior Nicole Cardwell and first-year Shreya Ramani, who defeated Rochester's Cami Ruiz Vega and Natalie Ramesh 8-5 in the second doubles match, and junior Mira Amin and first-year Nina Hoog who picked up an 8-6 win at third doubles over Bianca Dyer and Sravya Gudipudi. The Spartans lone loss came in the first match, where junior Madeleine Paolucci and first-year Savannah Bright suffered a 7-6 (7-2) defeat to Abbey Reinhart and Rola Abouzeina.

The Spartans went on to win four of the next six singles matches. Sophomore Nidhi Jha earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Yaya Wang at fifth singles, with Paolucci claiming a 6-2, 6-02 victory over Abouzeina at first singles. In the second singles match, Ramani picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Reinhart and Bright defeated Ruiz Vega 6-4, 6-0 in the third singles contest.

The Spartans two losses came at fourth singles, where Gudipudi bested sophomore Sneha Karnam 6-4, 6-4, and at sixth singles, where sophomore Shreyaa Mukund fell to Dyer 7-5, 6-4.

Case Western Reserve will now turn their attention towards their California trip, which will begin with a match against Bowdoin College on Monday, March 9th.
