Spartans See Winning Streak End with Loss at Rochester

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team could not overcome a hot-shooting University of Rochester team on the road on Friday night, as the Spartans suffered an 88-60 setback to the Yellowjackets at the Louis Alexander Palestra in Rochester, New York.

The loss ended a six-game winning streak for the Spartans, who fell to 8-7 overall. It was also the first loss in University Athletic Association play for CWRU, which fell into second place in the league standings with a 3-1 conference ledger. Rochester improved to 7-8 overall with a 1-3 record in UAA play.

First-year guard McKenna Gross came off the bench to lead all Spartans on Friday with a career-best 17 points, shooting an efficient six-of-eight from the floor, including two-of-four from behind the three point line. She added three rebounds and an assist for the Spartans.  First-year guard/ forward Isabella Mills added 12 points and a team-high five rebounds, while sophomore guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence chipped in 10 points for CWRU.

However, Rochester came out shooting hot on Friday night, hitting 55.4% of their shots from the floor in the opening half, including nine-of-14 (64.3%) from behind the three-point line. The Yellowjackets never trailed in the game, and after Gross tied the contest at 8-8 with a three-pointer late in the first quarter, Rochester closed the period on an 18-4 run to take the lead for good.

The Spartans would be unable to pull back within single digits for the remainder of the game. Rochester led 47-29 at halftime, and took a 73-49 lead into the final quarter of the game.

CWRU finished the game shooting 38.5% from the floor, but could not keep pace with the Rochester attack, which ended the contest with 15 three pointers on 27 attempts (55.6%) and a 52.5% overall field goal percentage. Lauren Foley came off the bench to make six threes for the Yellowjackets, finishing with a game-high 18 points.

Case Western Reserve will have a chance to climb back into a tie for first place in the UAA standings on Sunday, when the Spartans travel to Atlanta, Georgia to face the Emory University Eagles, who stayed undefeated in league play with a 55-43 win over Carnegie Mellon on Friday. Tip-off of Sunday's game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
