16th-Ranked Spartans Earn 7-2 Win over Indiana (Pa.)

The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team claimed a 7-2 win over Indiana University of Pennsylvania at the Cleveland Skating Club on Saturday night.

The win was the Spartans' second-straight, as they now improve to 2-1 on the campaign. Indiana dropped to 2-2 on the year with loss.

The Crimson Hawks grabbed the early lead in the match, with Julia Newman and Mariana Valenzuela picking up an 8-7 win over freshmen Sneha Karnam and Nidhi Jha at second doubles, followed by an 8-4 victory at third doubles for Laura Dunarova and Maria Magraner over sophomore Mira Amin and freshman Shreyaa Mukund. At first doubles, sophomores Madeleine Paolucci and Nicole Cardwell were able to pick up a key point for the Spartans, winning 8-4 over Katya Minchenkova and Thais Andreotti to make it a 2-1 score heading into singles play.

Mukund defeated Magraner 6-4 and then won by retirement at sixth singles. The Spartans next two wins came in straight sets at second and third singles. Karnam picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Newman at second singles, and Cardwell claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win over Dunarova in the third match. Rounding out the slate of victories for the Spartans were Paolucci over Minchenkova, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), at first singles, Amin besting Andreotti 7-5, 6-1 at fourth singles and then Jha defeating Valenzuela 7-5, 6-4 at fifth singles.

Case Western Reserve will continue play this weekend when they head to the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion to face Division I opponent Cleveland State University for a 6:00 p.m. meeting on Sunday, February 24th.
