Women's 400 Free Relay Earns All-UAA Honors; Women Finish Sixth, Men Sixth at UAA Championships

The Case Western Reserve University women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Suhan Mestha, senior Inez Moore, freshman Caitlyn VonFeldt and freshman Vanya Ruppart placed third in the event to lead the Spartan women to a sixth-place finish, while the men placed sixth, at the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday.

The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team placed third in the event with a NCAA 'B' cut time and new school record time of 3:28.84. That time bests the previous school record of 3:30.71 set at the 2017 Wooster Invitational.

The Spartan women scored 740.50 points to finish sixth overall in the team standings. Emory won the meet with 2,049 points, New York finished second with 1,246.50 points, and Carnegie Mellon finished third with 1,213.50 points. On the men's side, CWRU placed sixth with 772.50 points, while Emory won the meet with 1,725 points. NYU claimed second with 1,519 points and Washington (Mo.) finished third with 1,492.50 points.

The Spartan women claimed two other 'B' cut times on Saturday. VonFeldt placed ninth in the 200-yard backstroke with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:01.47, while Mestha finished 10th in the event with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:02.16.

Sophomore Sarah Taekman added a 13th-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.50, while junior Kelsey Holmberg placed 14th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:11.30.

Top performances for the men on Saturday included the 400-yard freestyle relay team of senior Drew Hamilton, senior Oliver Hudgins, senior John Tomko and junior Brody Schmidt finishing sixth in the event with a time of 3:06.91.

Individually, Hudgins finished 11th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.39), freshman Will McDonald placed 14th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.59), Hamilton finished 10th in the 100-yard freestyle (46.15) and senior Evan Rose placed 13th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.27). In addition, the Spartans men had a strong performance in the 1,650-yard freestyle as junior Keith Erichsen finished 10th (16:14.02), Schmidt placed 11th (16:15.75) and senior David Merriman finished 14th (16:21.10).

The Spartans will now turn their attention towards the Midwest Invitational, hosted by the University of Chicago. They will travel to Chicago, Illinois from Friday, February 23rd through Saturday, February 24th. Competition is set to begin Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. ET.
