Hamilton & Mestha Claim All-UAA Honors on Friday

 

Senior Drew Hamilton finished third in the 400-yard individual medley and junior Suhan Mestha placed third in the 100-yard backstroke to highlight the Spartans' Friday night performances at the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hamilton placed third in the 400-yard individual medley with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 3:59.25. Freshman Sean Twomey added a seventh place finish in the event with a time of 4:05.09.

Mestha finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a NCAA 'B' cut and new school-record time of 56.09. She bests her previous school record of 56.24 set at the Wooster Invitational this past December. Freshman Caitlyn VonFeldt also placed ninth in the event with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 56.82.

For the men, the 200-yard medley relay team of Hamilton, senior Oliver Hudgins, senior John Kilbane and senior Aaron Pang finished sixth in the event with a time of 1:34.64. Hamilton, Hudgins and Twomey also teamed with junior Brody Schmidt in the 800-yard freestyle relay to place sixth with a time of 6:48.77.

Individually for the men, Hudgins placed 14th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.85. Kilbane finished 13th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.63, while senior Evan Rose placed 16th in the event with a time of 58.62.

For the women, the 200-yard medley relay team of Mestha, VonFeldt, senior Inez Moore and junior Alli Drohosky placed sixth in the event with a time of 1:45.53. The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of junior Alexa Simoneau, junior Kelsey Holmberg, sophomore Olivia Picchione and freshman Vanya Ruppart finished sixth in the event with a time of 7:51.03.

Individually for the Spartan women, sophomore Sarah Taekman placed 16th in both the 400-yard individual medley (4:41.24) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.91). Simoneau added a 15th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.46.

With one day remaining at the UAA Championships, the Case Western Reserve men are in sixth place with 513 points, while the women are in sixth with 530. Emory leads both team standings, with the women totaling 1,461 points and the men 1,153 points through three days of competition.

The 2018 UAA Championships will conclude on Saturday, with the men's one-meter dive, the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay on the slate of events for the final day.
