Hamilton Notches NCAA 'B' Cut; Mestha Claims All-UAA Honors & NCAA 'B' Cut on Thursday

Case Western Reserve University senior Drew Hamilton recorded an NCAA Division III 'B' cut time and junior Suhan Mestha placed third in the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA 'B' cut time to highlight the second day of competition at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships on Thursday, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hamilton recorded the 'B' cut time of 4:30.70 in the 500-yard freestyle en route to placing fifth in the event. Two other Spartans gathered points in the event with junior Keith Erichsen (15th, 4:40.96) and freshman Andrew Duffield (23rd, 4:42.89).

Mestha placed third in the 'A' final of the women's 50-yard freestyle with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 23.62. to earn All-UAA honors. Senior Inez Moore added a 24th place finish in the event with a time of 24.85.

Hamilton also teamed with senior Oliver Hudgins, senior John Kilbane and freshman Will McDonald in the 400-medley relay to finish sixth with a time of 3:25.05. In addition, the Spartans 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior John Tomko, junior Brody Schmidt, freshman Dakota Weinman, and freshman Chris Lemley finished 8th in the event with a time of 1:26.74.

Individually for the men, freshman Sean Twomey added a 21st place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:55.29, while senior Aaron Pang placed 23rd in the event with a time of 1:56.46.

For the women, Mestha and Moore also teamed with junior Bhavya Kumaran and freshman Caitlyn VonFeldt in the 200-yard freestyle relay to finish fifth in the event with a time of 1:36.32.

Individually, senior Brooke Hortness finished eighth in the one-meter dive with a score of 350.35 in the finals.

After two days of competition for the women, the Spartans sat in seventh place in the team standings. The Case Western Reserve University men were sixth after one day of action at the conference championships.

Action at the UAA Championships will resume on Friday, with preliminaries scheduled for 10:00 a.m. ET and finals beginning at 5:30 p.m. ET. Events to be contested during the third day of the championships included the men's three-meter dive, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard individual medley, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
