Spartans Wrap-Up Fall at a Pair of Weekend Competitions

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its 2016-17 schedule this weekend, with the team competing at the Rocket Invitational in Toledo, Ohio and hosting the CWRU Invitational at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio.

Both of the weekend competitions featured a hidden dual format, with teams competing for individual results, but not for team records.  At the CWRU Invitational, which was moved to Cleveland State's indoor facility due to poor weather, the Spartans went up against Marietta College, Kenyon College and the University of Northwestern Ohio.  Senior Adam Collins finished the day with a team-best 2-1 singles record, while sophomore Oludayo Areke, freshman Zach Hennessey, freshman Varun Jayaram, and senior Gabriel Murcia all went 1-0 in singles contests.

In doubles action at the CWRU Invitational, seniors Gabriel Murcia and Phillip Gruber led the team with a 2-1 record, with five other doubles pairing registering at least one victory over the three matches.

Facing mostly Division I opposition at the Rocket Invitational on Friday and Saturday, freshman Anthony Kanam went undefeated in singles matches with a 3-0 record, earning All-Tournament honors at the event, while freshman Sam Concannon completed the weekend with a 2-1 singles record.  Adding a pair of singles victories in Toledo was freshman Siddharth Rajupet, who finished the weekend with a 2-1 singles ledger.

In doubles play, freshmen Joshua Piatos and Rajeev Laungani went 2-1 together to lead the Spartans, with the pairing of senior Fred Daum and John Benedetto and senior Josh Dughi and Concannon each registering a victory as well.

At the end of the fall campaign, Concannon leads the Spartans in singles wins with a 7-2 overall record, with Kanam and Rajupet each collecting five victories apiece.

With their fall season now complete, the Spartans will be off for the remainder of the semester, before returning to action for the spring campaign, starting at Rose-Hulman on Friday, February 10th, 2017.
