Men’s Tennis Run at ITA Regional Championship Ends on Sunday

The two remaining Case Western Reserve University men's tennis singles players, junior George Kosseifi and sophomore Jon Totorica, and one remaining doubles pairing of graduate student Bryce Ware and junior Trey Lambright each saw their runs at the ITA Fall Central Region Championship in Kalamazoo, Michigan, come to a close on Sunday.

Kosseifi, seeded ninth overall, reached the semifinals of the singles draw while Totorica, seeded 17th, ended his tournament play in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Ware and Lambright, seeded ninth, suffered a close loss in a tiebreaker in the semifinals of the doubles draw.

Stats and Standouts


  • Ware and Lambright were the first up for the Spartans on Sunday, facing unseeded Albert Mackey and Heyang Li of Chicago in the semifinals. The match was close and went to a tiebreaker with the score tied at 7-7. Ware and Lambright led 5-0 in the tiebreaker and had match point at 6-4, but could not close out the win and eventually fell 8-6 in the tiebreaker.

  • Kosseifi faced fellow ninth-seeded Maximo Llamas Castellanos of Kenyon in the quarterfinals and was able to pull off  a thrilling three-set win. After dropping the first set 6-4, Kosseifi battled back to even the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. A closely-played third set went to a tiebreaker, and Kosseifi was eventually able to pull out a 7-6 (6) win to claim the set and the match.

  • Kosseifi was matched up against top-seeded Kael Shah of Denison in the semifinals, falling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

  • Totorica suffered a straight-set loss to ninth-seeded Alejandro Gonzalez in the quarterfinals on Sunday, losing 7-5, 7-5.

Spartan Notes


  • The Spartans finished the ITA Regionals with a combined 14-6 singles record (.700) and a 6-4 mark in doubles matches (.600).

  • As a team in the fall, CWRU stands at 120-52 in singles matches (.698) and 46-27 in doubles action (.630).

  • Kosseifi stands at 5-5 in singles matches during the fall season, while Totorica is 8-3. In doubles action, Ware and Lambright are 5-1 together in the fall, with Ware going 8-2 in doubles matches overall and Lambright going 8-1.
