Box Score

CLEVELAND - The Case Western Reserve baseball team dropped a high-scoring affair, 14-8, to No. 16 Baldwin Wallace University at Nobby's Ball Park.

Freshman first baseman Steve Dayton (Allison Park, PA/Hampton) went 2-for-2 with one run batted in and freshman centerfielder Daniel Watson (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis Priory School) doubled, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Sophomore pitchers Andrew Rossman (North Royalton, OH/North Royalton) and Preston Williams (Houston, TX/Second Baptist) each pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.

After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning on three hits and an error, the Spartans got one back in the bottom half. Consecutive singles by senior shortstop Kerrigan Cain (Hartville, OH/Archbishop Hoban), senior third baseman Andrew Gronski (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Davidson), and senior designated hitter Jordan Swisher (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) loaded the bases before a groundout by sophomore catcher Eric Eldred (Tecumseh, MI/Tecumseh) scored Cain.

The Yellowjackets added another run in the second inning on a hit batter, a single, and two walks.

The Spartans scored once in the fourth inning when Eldred doubled to left field and scored on a double to right-center by sophomore leftfielder Josh Neal (Gaithersburg, MD/St, John's College).

Baldwin Wallace put seven runs across in the fifth inning as 10 of the first 11 batters reached base for an 11-2 lead.
CWRU scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth. Sophomore catcher Sam D'Alessio (Cincinnati, OH/Walnut Hills) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Watson, who walked with one out. Junior infielder Zach Tobias (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore third baseman Mitch Weigand (Troy, MI/Troy), who reached base on an error.

In the sixth inning, the Spartans scored three more runs as Watson doubled in Dayton and freshman rightfielder Nate Glasser (San Diego, CA/Francis Parker), stole third base, and scored on a double by Weigand.

The Yellow Jackets answered right back with three runs on three hits in the seventh inning to take a 14-7 lead.

Tobias singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, stole second base, and scored on a single by Dayton.

The Spartans, who dropped to 8-8, will complete the two-game home and home series at Baldwin Wallace tomorrow at 4 p.m.
