No. 23 Spartan Women Blank Rochester to Improve to 5-1

CLEVELAND - The No. 23 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team swept Universtiy Athletic Association rival University of Rochester 9-0 today at the Cleveland Skating Club.

The Spartans improve to 5-1 and have won three consecutive matches. The team's only loss this season came to a Division I opponent.

The Yellowjackets dropped to 1-2.

The Spartans did not drop more than thee games in any doubles match to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. Senior Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) and junior Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles as did the combination of junior Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) and sophomore Sarah Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield Academy) at No. 3 doubles. 

Junior Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) and freshman Nithya Kanagasegar (Crossville, Tenn./Cumberland County) won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

The Spartans captured all six singles matches in straight sets with Kanagasegar winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Zargham winning by nearly the same score, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Also securing two points were Djohan, a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3 singles, and Berchuck, who took No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-3.

The Spartans won two out of three doubles matches before claiming all six singles points. At No. 2 doubles, Khadilkar and senior Bonanno defeated their opponents 8-4. At No. 3, Djohan and Berchuck won by the exact same score.

Freshman Nina Cepeda (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and sophomore Kennedy Mulholland (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Beachwood) earned points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Cepeda won 6-2, 6-3, while Mulholland won 6-0, 6-3.

With their scheduled match against Ohio Wesleyan University for Sunday postponed, the Spartans are off untl their spring break trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
