CWRU Swimming & Diving Sweeps Season-Opener at JCU

The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams each picked up wins in their season-opening competition on Saturday, with the men claiming a 186-107 win over John Carroll University, and the women earning a 198-98 victory against the Blue Streaks.

A pair of Spartan women claimed wins in multiple events on Saturday.  Freshman Suhan Mestha won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.57, the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:00.16 and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.86.  Sophomore Ellie Wilson added first-place finishes in the 50-yard breaststroke (31.28 seconds) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.42).

Also notching top finishes in events for the Spartan women were Rebecca Pakradooni in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.77), Lauren Homack in the 50-yard freestyle (25.75 seconds), Emily Budziszewski in the 1-meter dive (217.55), Renee Decker in the 100-yard freestyle (55.88 seconds), Kelsey Holmberg in the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.11), and Brooke Hortness in the three-meter dive (217.45).  CWRU also had a first-place finish from its women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Inez Moore, Jenny Eurich, Decker and Homack (1:41.26).

For the men, Aaron Tam won the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 51.48 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 48.81 seconds, while also teaming with Oliver Hudgins, John Seiler and Elliott Kerbel to finish first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 1:27.03.  Drew Hamilton earned event victories in the 500-yard freestyle (4:49.48) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.89), and Connor Farrell swept the diving events with a score of 267.40 in the one-meter dive, and 298.20 in the three-meter dive.

Other first-place finishers for the CWRU men includes James Hisnanick in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:08.98), Kerbel in the 50-yard freestyle (22.13), Alec David in the 50-yard butterfly (23.80 seconds), and the 200-yard medley relay team of Hudgins, Kerbel, David and Tam (1:38.16).

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, facing Carnegie Mellon University, Clarion University and Gannon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday, October 31st at 1:00 p.m.
