ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The No. 23
nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis
team swept the University of Rochester (N.Y.), 9-0, in its second
match of the 2014 University Athletic Association
Championship at Sanlando Park. The sixth-seeded Spartans now
advance to the fifth-place match to play fifth-seeded Brandeis
University (Mass.) on Sunday.
The Spartans improve to 10-10 overall and 1-1 in the UAA, while
the Yellowjackets fall to 5-11 and 0-2. Last season, CWRU placed
sixth in the conference, a mark that was the best UAA Championship
finish for the program since it finished fifth in 1997.
The partnership of Sara Zargham
(Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science) & Marianne
Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) won at No. 1 by a score of
8-4 over Rochester's pairing of Cara Genbauffe & Christine
Ho. Freshman Sarah
Berchuck (Dallas, Texas/Baylor School & Suffield
Academy) & sophomore Surya
Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) as well as
sohpomores Taylor Sweeney
(Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) & Michelle
Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) won by scores of 8-2 and
8-1, respectfully.
The six Spartans involved in doubles play would then go on to in
singles play as CWRU would only drop one set for the entire
match.
Brandeis, who serves as CWRU's Sunday opponent, fell to the
University of Chicago by a score of 6-3 on Friday before defeating
New York University, 8-1, to reach the fifth-place match. CWRU and
Brandeis met in last season's fifth-place match, with the Judges
prevailing, 5-4.
