FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Led by 2-0 days from sophomores Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) and Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake), the No. 27 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over the University of California, Santa Cruz on the opening day of Mary Washington University's Blue/Grey Invitational.
The Spartans improve to 6-4 in dual matches this season, while the Banana Slugs drop to 2-11. After UC Santa Cruz won two-of-three in doubles, the Spartans claimed five-of-six in singles.
Sweeney and Djohan won at third doubles with an 8-1 victory over Monika Prokes and Kassondra Heacock. Sweeney then won 6-2, 7-6 (8) at third singles, while Djohan earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory at sixth singles.
CWRU takes on Skidmore College (N.Y.) tomorrow (Saturday, March 29) at 2:00 p.m. on the second day of the invitational.
