WHITTIER, Calif. – The No. 30 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team opened its spring break schedule on Saturday with a split versus a pair of California foes. The Spartans were bested in the morning, 7-2, by No. 22 University of Redlands, but rebounded a few hours later versus Whittier College, 6-3.

With the split, the Spartans move to 7-3 in dual matches this season.

Against Redlands (5-0), the No. 3 doubles tandem of senior Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and freshman Taylor Sweeney (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern) were victorious by an 8-5 score versus Lauren Villanueva and Gabriela Vasquez. The other Spartan point came from Sweeney at No. 3 singles via a 7-5, 7-5 victory versus Ceara Sumida.

The Spartans then traveled an hour inland and battled Whittier (4-2). In doubles play, Case took two-of-three matches. The Poets grabbed the point in the top slot, but the No. 2 tandem of senior Erika Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman Michelle Djohan (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) as well as the No. 3 duo of sophomore Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) and senior Emily Pham (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) gave the Spartans a lead by scores of 8-3 and 8-2, respectively.

In singles, Whittier took the point at No. 1. However, Sweeney answered for Case and improved to 2-0 in solo play for the day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the second spot. Djohan was a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 winner at No. 4; freshman Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School) won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5; and Evers capped off the scoring with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 6.

The Spartans are right back in action on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. PST when they travel a bit east to Claremont, California and battle No. 9 nationally-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
