CHICAGO – Junior Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) broke the school 200-yard freestyle record, freshman diver Connor Farrell (Bedord Corners, N.Y./Fox Lane) broke the three-meter dive school mark, and the No. 16 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team set a program relay record on day three of four of the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship at the Ratner Center.
The Spartans dropped one spot in the team standings with 861.5 points through 14 scored events. No. 6 Emory University (Ga.) is first at 1,301.5, while host University of Chicago is second at 893.5 and No. 13 Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) is fourth at 857.
During morning prelims, McHenry broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.85. The previous standard of 1:42.10 was set last year by current Spartan sophomore Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key).
In the opening men's event of the evening finals, the Spartans broke a third school relay record this week with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:32.98 in the 200 medley by sophomore Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), juniors Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), and sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West). The previous record of 1:33.23 was set in 2009.
In the final event of the night, the Spartans hit another "B" cut in the 800 free relay as the quartet of freshman Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior), Bollinger, sophomore Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and senior Chris Emr (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) finished in 6:51.96.
During the three-meter springboard event, Farrell posted a total of 506.10 points, good for fifth. That point total eclipses the mark of 441.75 set in 2011 by junior teammate Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon).
The UAA Championship wraps up on Saturday with prelims set for 10:00 a.m. (CDT) and finals at 6:00 p.m. (CDT).
