CHICAGO – Led by two school-record relay performances and an individual NCAA "B" cut by sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), the No. 16 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team moved into second place after day two of four at the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship at the Ratner Center.
Through six scored events, the Spartans have racked up 393 points to rank behind No. 6 Emory University (Ga.) with 594.5. Host University of Chicago is third at 347, No. 13 Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) is fourth at 337, and Washington University-St. Louis is fifth at 318.
During morning prelims, Kerbel set a personal best and hit an NCAA "B" cut with a second-place time of 20.86 seconds in the 50 free. In the evening finals, Kerbel bettered his mark to 20.83 and earned All-UAA honors in third place.
In the opening event of the night, the Spartans' 200 free relay team finished second as one of two schools in the event to break the pool record. The quartet of Kerbel, sophomores Caleb Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) and Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), and junior Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) finished in 1:22.83, shattering the previous school record of 1:24.68 set last winter. Haufler and Allen were each a part of last season's record performance. The winning quartet from Emory finished just ahead with a UAA-record of 1:22.22.
In the final event of the night, another school record fell as the 400 medley relay touched the wall in a "B" cut time of 3:25.50. The quartet consisted of sophomore Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), junior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), Eric Haufler and Kerbel. The old mark of 3:27.17 was set in 2009.
Overall, Kerbel was a part of three NCAA "B" cuts and a pair of school records.
Day three of the UAA Championship begins with 10:00 a.m. (CDT) prelims on Friday morning. Finals are slated for 6:00 p.m. (CDT).
