WOOSTER, Ohio – Senior Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) broke his own school 200-yard freestyle record in prelims then did the same during finals as the Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team moved into first place on day two of The College of Wooster Invitational at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium.
The Spartans have 993.5 points to rank ahead of second-place Ohio Northern University's 951. Division II Malone University is a distant third at 740.
McHenry swam a 1:41.56 in the morning then placed runner-up in the evening with a time of 1:41.55. His previous record of 1:41.85 came at last February's University Athletic Association Championship.
In diving action, senior co-captain Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) won the individual title on the 3-meter board with a score of 468.05.
Also in the pool, senior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) turned in a fourth-place time of 58.82 in the 100 breaststroke, and senior Karch Petersen (Nassau Bay, Texas/Lutheran South Academy) placed fifth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:14.87.
In the 800 free relay, the Spartans captured third place as the quartet of sophomore Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior), junior Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), freshman Andrew Henning (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and McHenry finished in 6:54.40.
The Spartans have won the last three Wooster Invite titles under fourth-year Head Coach Doug Milliken. The meet wraps up tomorrow with 10:00 a.m. prelims and 5:00 p.m. finals. Following this weekend, the Spartans are idle for winter break training and won't return to competition until Saturday, January 18 at Allegheny College (Pa.).
