WOOSTER, Ohio - The No. 24 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team began its quest on Thursday for a fourth-consecutive title at The College of Wooster Invitational. The Spartans rank second of nine teams after day one at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium.
Ohio Northern University is first in the team standings with 417 points. The Spartans totaled 391.5 in second, and Division II Malone University is a close third at 359.
The Spartans picked up significant points in the final two events of the night, the 200-yard free and 400-yard medley relays.
In the 200 event, Case picked up a first-place finish as the quartet of senior Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), sophomores Daniel Sederholm (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Jason Arne (Atlanta, Ga./Lakeside), and freshman Ben Fruitman (Weston, Fla./The Sagemont School) touched the wall in 1:28.56.
In the 400 medley relay, Arne swam anchor behind freshman Joe Jensen (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements), senior Sean Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and sophomore Alex Roznai (Mount Prospect, Ill./John Hersey) as the quartet finished runner-up in 3:39.33.
Individually, McHenry placed fourth in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 1:56.48. Sophomore Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior) also turned in a season best and finished fourth in the 500 free in 4:42.53.
The Spartans have won the last three Wooster Invite titles under fourth-year Head Coach Doug Milliken. Day two of the three-day meet begins tomorrow morning with 10:00 a.m. prelims. Finals are slated for 6:00 p.m.
