Mooney Scores Career High but Spartan Women Suffer First Loss of Season at BW

Box Score

BEREA, Ohio – Senior guard/co-captain Julie Mooney (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) scored a career-high 15 points, but the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team (2-1) fell by a score of 89-65 at cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University (2-1) on Tuesday evening at Ursprung Gymnasium.

After dominating their first two opponents of the season on the boards, the Spartans were out-rebounded 41-27. Three-point shooting was key as well as the Yellow Jackets hit 11 compared to Case's six.

In addition to Mooney, junior wing Brooke Orcutt (Morrison, Colo./Dakota Ridge) and junior point guard Amanda Germer (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Germer's total was a career high, while Orcutt added four rebounds and four assists.

Audrey Smolik scored a game-high 16 points to lead four Yellow Jackets in double-figures. Jessica Lairson and Shari Mangas added 12 apiece as the hosts shot 55% from three-point range.

In the first half, both sides took turns with small leads but neither was able to build an advantage of more than four until Allyson Helleis hit a layup to put BW on top 27-21 with 4:08 on the clock. That lead grew to 10 (37-27) several minutes later following a Lairson three-pointer at 1:35, but the Spartans were able to trim one off of their deficit thanks to a triple from freshman guard AuBree LaForce (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and went into the locker room down 39-30. Overall, the Yellow Jackets finished the period on an 18-9 run.

The second half picked up where the first left off, and BW increased its lead to 19 when Alissa Munro nailed a three-pointer to cap a 14-4 run and make the score 53-34 with 15:05 left to play. The Spartans tried to battle back with a 7-0 run that was capped by two Mooney free throws at 12:27, but BW answered with five in a row and eventually built its lead to as many as 27.

The Spartans return to action this Friday and Saturday, November 22-23 at Wilmington College's Fred Raizk Tournament. Case will open the weekend versus host Wilmington on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
