Men's Swimming and Diving

No. 22 Spartan Men Defeat No. 19 ONU on Seniors' Day

CLEVELAND – The No. 22 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team picked up wins in 10-of-16 events as part of a 185.5-110.5 victory versus No. 19 Ohio Northern University on Seniors' Day at Veale Natatorium.

The Spartans improve to 13-2-1 overall in duals this year with one left on the schedule. With the loss, the Polar Bears drop to 10-2.

Prior to the meet, CWRU honored its four swimming & diving senior student-athletes, including Chris Emr (Rockville, Md/Thomas S. Wooton), Kyle Tepe (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) and Tim Wibowo (Centerville, Ohio/Miami Valley School) on the men's side.

Seven different Spartans accounted for eight individual event wins led by junior Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) with wins in both diving events for the second-straight week. Jacobson, the reigning University Athletic Association Diver of the Week, scored 285.45 points on the one-meter board and 266.90 in the three-meter event.

Sophomore Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.33 and swam a leg on both of the Spartans' first-place relay quartets.

Also in freestyle events, sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) won the 50 in 21.61; Emr highlighted his final home meet with a victorious time of 4:53.96 in the 500; and freshman Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Regan Doral Senior) claimed first in the 1,000 with a mark of 10:01.20.

The Spartans also swept the backstroke events as sophomore Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) won the 100 in 53.87, and sophomore Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) won the 200 in 1:58.36.

In the opening relay of the day, the 400 medley, Case touched the wall first in 3:31.03 behind the team of Bollinger, junior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), Eric Haufler and junior Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City).

In the final event, the Spartans won the 400 free relay behind Eric Haufler, Kerbel, Bailey and junior Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) in a time of 3:12.23.

The Spartans conclude the regular season next Friday, February 1 at cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University at 6:00 p.m. That meet will be the final tune-up for the UAA Championship on February 13-16 in Chicago.
