Three Double-Winners Highlight Victory for Spartan Men versus Allegheny

CLEVELAND – Competing for the first time since early December, the Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team produced a first-place finish in 15-of-16 events en route to a 228-70 victory versus Allegheny College (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon inside the Veale Natatorium.

The Spartans improve to 12-2-1 overall in duals this season with just two left on the schedule. The loss drops the Gators to 3-4-1.

Three Spartans were individual double-winners on the day, including junior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), who also swam a leg for a winning relay team. Nickley touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.89 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.68.

Sophomore Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) also won twice with first-place finishes in the 200 backstroke (1:59.16) and the 200 individual medley (1:58.82).

In diving events, junior Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) won on the one-meter board with an NCAA "B-Cut" score of 310.05 and on the three-meter board with 281.50.

Five of Case's victories came in freestyle events from sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) in the 50 (21.69), junior Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) in the 100 (48.57), junior Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) in the 200 (1:47.11), senior Chris Emr (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) in the 500 (4:59.20) and junior Matt Flaherty (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) in the 1,000 (10:21.44).  

The Spartans' other two individual wins came from sophomore Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) in the 100 back (54.60) and sophomore Aaron Yeung (Perrysburg, Ohio/St. Johns Jesuit) in the 100 butterfly (2:00.48).

The opening relay of the day, the 400 medley, resulted in a Spartan victory as the quartet of Bollinger, Nickley, sophomore Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Hudgins finished in 3:32.53. Case also claimed the 200 free to close the night behind the team of Eric Haufler, freshman Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior), Hudgins and Kerbel with a time of 1:26.99.

The Spartans conclude the home portion of the 2012-13 schedule next Saturday, January 26 with Seniors' Day versus Ohio Northern University at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the meet, Case Western Reserve will honor its four swimming & diving seniors, including men's student-athletes Emr, Kyle Tepe (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) and Tim Wibowo (Centerville, Ohio/Miami Valley School).
