CLEVELAND – A small contingent from the No. 13 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team wrapped up the first half of the season at the College Cup Dual Meet Invitational hosted by Division I Cleveland State University on Tuesday inside Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
The Spartans competed against two NCAA Division I schools in Cleveland State and Canisius College (N.Y.). NCAA Division II Notre Dame College (Ohio) and NCAA Division III John Carroll University completed the field.
Case was victorious versus JCU by a score of 168-45 and versus NDC by a count of 173-51. The Spartans fell to CSU, 183-57, and Canisius, 149-91. Overall, the Spartans move to an impressive 11-2-1 in dual meets this season with losses coming strictly to DI competition.
In the opening men's event of the day, the Spartans placed third in the 200-yard medley relay as the team of sophomore Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), juniors Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), and sophomore Caleb Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) finished in a time of 1:37.73.
Individually, Nickley won the 100 breaststroke in 59.83. He defeated seven DI competitors in the event as well as four from DII.
Sophomore Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished runner-up in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.91. He also placed third behind two DI competitors in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:45.76.
Alex Haufler was third with a mark of of 2:00.13 in the 200 individual medley.
In the final event of the day, the Spartans' 200 free relay squad placed runner-up as Eric Haufler, junior Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), Allen and Bailey touched the wall in 1:26.92.
The Spartans are now onto winter break training and will not compete again until a dual meet on Saturday, January 19 at Allegheny College (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m.
