WOOSTER, Ohio – The No. 13 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team picked up 11 top-five finishes on the third and final day of the 2012 College of Wooster Invitational to win the meet for the third-straight season.
The Spartans, a perfect 9-0-1 in dual meets, have little time to rest as they will take part in the Cleveland College Dual Meet Invitational hosted by Cleveland State University on Tuesday, December 4. Diving is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., while swimming will start at 5:00 p.m.
Case topped the nine-team field with 1,630 points, while Ohio Northern University finished in second with 1,475.5. Rounding out the top-five teams were NCAA Division II Gannon University (Pa.) in third with 1,063.5, DII Edinboro University (Pa.) with 986 for fourth and Westminster College (Pa.) in fifth with 976.
The Spartans' top swimming performance of the day came in the 200-yard breaststroke, as junior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished with a third-place mark of 2:07.29.
Also turning in top-five finishes were junior Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) in the 100-yard freestyle (5th/47.38), sophomore Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) in the 200 backstroke (5th/1:56.88) and twin brother Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) in the 200 fly (5th/1:57.20).
During relay events, the team of junior Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), junior Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Bailey stopped the clocked with a time of 3:09.17 for fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
On the diving board, junior Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) recorded a pair of runner-up finishes for the Spartans with scores of 431.15 points on the three-meter board and 408.80 on the one-meter board. Freshman Jacob Kasper (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) was third on both boards with scores of 419.40 on the three-meter and 382.30 on the one-meter.
Additionally, freshman Connor Farrell (Bedord Corners, N.Y./Fox Lane) posted a fourth-place showing on the three-meter (381.95) and a fifth-place effort on the one-meter (349.85).
