WOOSTER, Ohio – Juniors Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each won individual events, and the No. 13 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team improved to first place after day two of the College of Wooster Invitational at the Ellen Shapiro Natatorium. The Spartans are the invite's two-time defending champion.
The Spartans, who ranked second after day one, lead the way with 990 team points following the second day. Ohio Northern University is second at 953.5, while Division II schools Gannon University (Pa.) and Edinboro University (Pa.) are third and fourth with totals of 726.5 and 713, respectively.
Clyde took first in a 24-person field of the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:10.50.
McHenry also bested 23 other competitors in the 200 freestyle with a career-best time of 1:42.43.
In addition to Clyde in the 400 IM finals, the Spartans claimed three of the top six spots. Sophomore Aaron Yeung (Perrysburg, Ohio/St. Johns Jesuit) was third in 4:16.00, while juniors Matt Flaherty (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) and Karch Petersen (Nassau Bay, Texas/Lutheran South Academy) finished fifth and sixth with respective times of 4:20.01 and 4:20.32.
Junior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished fourth of 24 in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 58.36, while sophomore Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) placed fifth in the100 backstroke in 52.05.
The Spartans then closed out the evening with a victory in the 800 free relay as the quartet of sophomore Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key), sophomore Caleb Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden), junior Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and McHenry touched the wall in 6:59.40.
The third and final day of the Wooster Invite is set for tomorrow with 10:00 a.m. prelims and 5:00 p.m. finals.
