Spartan Swimming & Diving Beats Lake Erie to Advance in Cleveland City Tournament

CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined to beat Division II Lake Erie College, 306-168, in the second meet of the Cleveland City Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Veale Natatorium.

The Spartan men (6-0) and women (3-3) defeat their second-straight DII opponent after knocking off Notre Dame College (Ohio) last evening. Case now advances to the championship portion of the series next weekend.

On the men's side, junior Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) swept both diving events with 295.1 points on the one-meter board and 295.7 in the three-meter event. Sophomore Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) claimed the third of the Spartan individual event victories with a time of 21.43 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Case also captured one-of-two relays with the quartet of sophomore Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) along with juniors Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) finishing the 400 free relay in 3:11.67.

On the women's side, juniors Sara Tillie (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Maggie Dillione (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) along with freshman Riki Drout (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wallnut Hills) each won two individual events.

Tillie took first in the 1,000 free (11:01.17) and the 100 free (55.61). Dillione was victorious in the 50 free (24.90) and 200 butterfly (2:10.81), while Drout swept diving events with 183.2 points in the one-meter event and 193.7 in the three-meter.

In relays, the Spartans opened the meet with a victory in the 400 medley behind the team of freshman Alison Thirion (Cortland, Ohio/Warren G. Harding), senior co-captain Krysta Payne (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley), Dillione and freshman Rebecca Pakradooni (Martinez, Ga./Lakeside) with a time of 4:12.00.

In the final event of the afternoon, Case won the 400 free relay as Tillie, freshman Nicole Thompson (Great Falls, Mont./C.M. Russell), Thirion and freshman Rachael Loek (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) touched the wall in 3:47.37.

Overall, the Spartan women captured 10 events.
