Box Score 2 ATLANTA – Senior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) broke the school career record for digs as the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches on day one of the 2012 University Athletic Association Championship Tournament at Woodruff Physical Education Center. The fourth-seeded Spartans defeated No. 5 seed Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in five, but fell to top-seeded and No. 6 nationally-ranked Emory University (Ga.) in four.
The Spartans (24-10 overall, 5-4 UAA) dropped the opening set to the Tartans (14-17, 2-6 UAA), 25-19, but rebounded to win the next two by scores of 25-15 and 25-13. CMU forced a fifth set with a 25-20 win, but Case won the deciding set via a count of 15-11.
In the semifinals, Emory (30-5, 7-1 UAA) won 25-15, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-14 to send the Spartans to the third-place match versus University of Chicago (Ill.) tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
Versus CMU, Gulasey broke the record early in the first set as she passed Andrea Lamont's (2006-09) previous mark of 2,190. Overall, the senior's 24 digs led three players in double-figures as senior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) and freshman setter Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) each recorded season highs with 22 and 20, respectively.
Offensively, freshman outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) led the attack with 21 kills on a .349 hitting percentage. Sophomore middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) returned after missing six matches with an illness and contributed 14 kills.
Freeman, who missed a triple-double by just four kills, paced the offense with 47 assists.
Versus Emory, Bogart was once again the attack leader with 11 kills, while Freeman quarterbacked the offense with 28 assists. Defensively, Gulasey racked up another 12 digs and now has 2,223 for her career.
Emory advances to play No. 1 nationally-ranked Washington University-St. Louis in the championship match at 1:00 p.m.
