Box Score 2 PITTSBURGH – Competing on the first day of the second University Athletic Association Round Robin of the fall, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches with host Carnegie Mellon University and No. 6 nationally-ranked Emory University (Ga.) on Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
The Spartans (17-7, 3-2 UAA) swept CMU (11-13, 1-4 UAA) by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 26-24, but Emory (21-3, 5-0 UAA) pulled out the broom versus the Spartans by counts of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-21.
Versus CMU, freshmen outside hitters Samantha Buddemeyer (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) and Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) led the attack with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman setter Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) and senior Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) paced the offense with assist totals of 18 and 16.
Defensively, senior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led three players in double-figures with 17 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) totaled a block solo and four block assists. Freeman contributed 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season.
Versus Emory, Southard was the top offensive performer with nine kills, and Bogart added eight. Freeman and Marks each reached double-figures in assists again with 15 and 11, respectively, while Gulasey led the defense with 15 digs.
The Spartans wrap up the final weekend of UAA regular season play tomorrow versus New York University and No. 12 University of Chicago (Ill.). This weekend's results along with those of the first round robin held back in late September determine the seeding for the UAA Championship Tournament on November 2-3 in Atlanta, Georgia.
