Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) scored a career-high 25 points as the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team won its fourth straight and stayed undefeated in University Athletic Association play with a 78-67 victory versus visiting New York University on Friday, January 14 at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the UAA heading into a Sunday home matchup with Brandeis University (MA) on Sunday. The Violets fall to 7-6 and 0-2 in the UAA.
The victory snapped a four-game Spartan losing streak to NYU and was only the fourth victory all-time for Case in 36 meetings.
Hollinger's career-high came on a crisp 10-of-13 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line. In addition, senior forward Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) totaled 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) totaled 10 points, six assists and four rebounds, and sophomore center Emily Mueller (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) chipped in a career-high 10 points and five boards.
NYU was led by Maggie Ely with 23 points.
The Spartans led 10-5 when Mueller capped an 8-0 run with a pair of baskets at 14:40 and 13:30. NYU got to within 10-7 following a Bianca Storts layup at 11:55, but the Spartans answered with five straight and led 15-7 when Hollinger completed a three-point play at 11:19. The Violets scored six in a row and closed the gap to 15-13 when Chrissy Kilmurray hit a layup at 9:39, but Case once again responded – this time with a 19-4 run that ended in a Hollinger jumper that made the score 34-17 with 4:09 left in the first half. NYU was able to trim three off of its deficit, but Case still led 38-24 at the break.
In the second half, the Spartans opened on a 12-2 run and led by a high of 24 when Iacono hit a free throw with 17:01 left to play. NYU chipped away in the final minutes and got as close as nine, at 62-53, when Kelly Loughney hit a layup with 3:44 remaining.
Case scored four in a row to re-build its lead to 66-53 as sophomore forward Marissa Miles (McDonald, PA/Fort Cherry) hit a pair of charity shots with 2:42 left on the clock. The Violets once again threatened to come back when they got to within seven, at 66-59 with 1:18 left, but Case was able to close on a 12-8 run to secure the victory.
