Westrick’s Heroics Lead to Walk-Off Win over UChicago, 8-7

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Eli Westrick hit a game-tying bases-loaded triple with two outs in the ninth and scored the game-winning run a batter later on a wild pitch, helping the Spartans overcome a six-run deficit to open their four-game University Athletic Association series against the University of Chicago with an 8-7 walk-off win at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland.

The win was the second straight victory for the Spartans, who improved to 15-12 overall with a 4-5 UAA record, while the Maroons fell to 11-13 with a 4-5 UAA mark.

Stats & Standouts

  • Westrick was the star of the game for the Spartans, collecting four hits in five at-bats with two runs scored and four runs batted in. He fell a home run shy of the cycle in the victory.

  • The CWRU bullpen kept the Spartans in the game after falling behind 6-0 early. Junior right-handed pitcher Zach Barnes did the bulk of the work, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just one run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Sophomore righty Oliver Miller pitched the final 3.1 innings, holding the Maroons scoreless on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts and earning the win to improve to 2-0.

  • Senior outfielder Matt Trout added a pair of hits, including a two-run double, and scored a run in the game.

  • CWRU outhit UChicago 10-4 in the contest.

Scoring Recap

  • The Maroons took early control of the game, putting six runs up in the top of the first inning.

  • CWRU scored a run in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Westrick, and another in the second when Trout scored on an error, making it a 6-2 contest.

  • The Spartans remained down by four runs until Chicago added a run in the top of the sixth to go ahead 7-2.

  • A two-out, two-run double by Trout in the bottom of the sixth trimmed the Maroons' lead back to three, 7-4.

  • CWRU has the tying run in the on-deck circle in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but would be unable to score on each occasion.

  • First-year third baseman James O'Connor started the Spartans' ninth-inning rally with a one-out walk, and after junior shortstop Nate Arterburn was hit by a pitch, a base hit by junior outfielder Tyler Stillson loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Westrick came to the plate and sent a 3-2 pitch off the base of the wall in left-center field, allowing all three runners to score.

  • UChicago reliever Grant Tentuta threw a wild pitch over the head of sophomore second baseman Calvin Gelle on a 1-1 count, allowing Westrick to score the game-winning run from third for the walk-off victory.
