Behind an all-around day from first-year pitcher/outfielder Camryn Mclelland, the 20th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team won both of its games on Sunday at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida, to begin THE Spring Games, defeating Lake Forest College 4-0 and Alfred University 9-4.
The Spartans improved to 6-0 to start the season, while the Foresters and Saxons both dropped to 1-1.
Mclelland starred in the circle and at the plate for the Spartans. She tossed five scoreless innings to earn the win in the first game, while also driving in three runs with a pair of homers. In the second contest, Mclelland had two hits, including a double, two runs batted in, and a stolen base.
Stats and Standouts
- Senior infielder Karen Potts had three hits against Alfred, including her first homer of the season, scored three times, and drove in two runs
- Junior outfielder Alaina Steffes had a pair of hits, including a home run, in the second game
- Sophomore infielder Kate Coonan had a pair of hits against Lake Forest, scoring once and drawing a walk
- Sophomore outfielder Ashley Miller had a multi-hit game against the Saxons with a single and a double
- Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry drove in a pair of runs across the two games
- Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra (2-0) started the second game, allowing four runs in five innings of work, and earned her second win of the campaign
- First-year pitcher Josephine Alspaw appeared in both contests in the circle, earning the save against Lake Forest with two shutout innings, and tossing a scoreless sixth inning against Alfred with a pair of strikeouts
- Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Laura Meoli threw a scoreless seventh inning in the second contest

- Mclelland led off the second frame with her first career home run, helping her own cause and breaking a scoreless tie
- She stranded the bases loaded in the following inning to preserve the shutout
- Mclelland struck again for her second home run in as many plate appearances in the third inning, increasing the lead to three with a two-run shot
- In the sixth inning, first-year infielder Natalie Ching had her first collegiate hit, a two-out triple, but she was stranded 60 feet from home
- The Spartans added a run in the final stanza when Coonan, who doubled earlier in the inning, scored on an error off the bat of Berry

- The Saxons struck first in the later contest, scoring in the opening frame on a single
- CWRU had the first two batters of the first inning reach base and both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Berry
- Mclelland continued her outstanding day at the plate, driving in both runs with a double to put the Spartans ahead
- Alfred evened the score at two with a bases loaded walk in the second, but Miller threw out the go-ahead run at home as part of an inning-ending double play
- Potts led off the third inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Berry to put the Spartans ahead for good
- Mclelland kept the inning alive with a two-out single and crossed the plate on a single by Miller, increasing the lead to two
- Steffes led off the fourth inning with her first home run of the season to extend the lead to three, 5-2
- CWRU manufactured a run later in the frame, making the score 6-2 when Ching touched home on a double steal
- Back-to-back two-out Alfred solo home runs in the fifth trimmed the Spartan lead to two, 6-4
- A double by first-year catcher Sophia Becker drove in Miller in the bottom of the stanza to make the score 7-4
- Alfred brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, but Alspaw induced a strikeout and a fly out to quell the threat
- Potts put the game away with a two-run home run in the team's final trip to the plate
Spartan Notes
- Mclelland's round tripper was the first hit by a Spartan this season and the combined shutout was the first of the year for CWRU
- She had the first multi-homer game by a Spartan since Potts hit two home runs against Hiram on April 29, 2025
- Coonan and Miller, who both reached base in each of the two games, have made it on base in six consecutive games to open the season
- First-year Abby Howard and first-year Nicole Vazquez made their collegiate debuts against Alfred
- The home run for Potts was the 11th of her career, tied for 16th most in program history, and Steffes had her fourth career four-base hit
- CWRU has scored four or more runs in all six of its games to begin the campaign
- The Spartans faced the Foresters and the Saxons for the first time in program history
