No. 20 Spartans Defeat Hope, Fall to No. 11 Moravian in Florida

The 20th-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team split a pair of games on Monday afternoon at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida, winning 8-3 over Hope College before falling 6-3 to 11th-ranked Moravian University.

The Spartans moved to 7-1 following the split, while the Flying Dutch dropped to 5-5 and the Greyhounds improved to 3-1.

Stats and Standouts


  • Senior pitcher Devanghi Misra (3-0) allowed just one run on two hits in six innings against Hope, striking out three
  • Sophomore infielder Kate Coonan, first-year infielder Natalie Ching, and junior outfielder Nylah Durham all had two hits against the Flying Dutch
  • Senior infielder Elizabeth Berry had a pair of hits against the Greyhounds
  • First-year pitcher/outfielder Camryn Mclelland (3-1) struck out six over four innings in the loss to Moravian, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits

  • Hope took an early lead on a first inning solo home run
  • The Spartans tied the score in the third when Durham crossed the plate on a groundout
    • Durham singled with one out and stole second and third base before scoring
  • Neither team scored until the fifth when CWRU added a pair of runs on a homer by junior infielder Karen Potts
    • It was her second home run in as many games and made the score 2-1
  • CWRU put the game out of reach in the sixth, plating five runs in the frame to lead 8-1
    • With two runners in scoring position, Ching drove in her first collegiate run with a single
    • A run scored on a bunt single by Durham, who advanced to second before the next plate appearance which allowed Ching to cross the plate
    • Berry wrapped up the scoring with a two-run single
  • The Flying Dutch hit a two-run home run in the final frame to make the final score 8-3

#11 Moravian 6, #20 CWRU 3


  • Potts led off the game with a single, advanced to third on a bunt by Durham, and scored on a groundout by Coonan to give CWRU an early lead
  • The Greyhounds quickly responded, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning and scoring four runs on a grand slam
  • The Spartans cut away at the deficit on a two-out run-scoring single by Mclelland
  • Moravian responded with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the frame, making the score 5-2
  • Neither team scored until the sixth inning, which Coonan led off with a double
  • After stealing second, she scored on a single by Berry to trim the deficit to two
  • However, the Spartans would be retired in order, leaving the tying run at the plate
  • Moravian added an unearned insurance run in the bottom of the inning on a single

Spartan Notes


  • Ching recorded the first multi-hit game of her career against Hope
  • With her two singles against Hope and a walk and single against Moravian, Coonan has reached base in all eight games this season
  • The Spartans improved to 5-2 all-time against the Flying Dutch, extending their winning streak in the series to four games
  • CWRU dropped to 1-3 against Moravian, in the first meeting between the schools in 12 years
  • The matchup was the first this year for Case Western Reserve against a team ranked in the national top 25
