No. 20 Baseball Bests Mitchell 5-2 to End Spartan Southern Classic

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team concluded its spring break trip on Saturday with a 5-2 win over Mitchell College in the final game of the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina.

The win was the second straight for the Spartans, who went 4-3 during the week in South Carolina and stand at 9-5 overall. The Mariners saw their three-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 5-4 overall.

Stats & Standouts

  • Five Spartan pitchers combined to hold Mitchell to two runs on nine hits during the game. Senior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski earned the win to improve to 2-0 after pitching two and a third scoreless innings in relief, allowing just two hits and striking out one.

  • Sophomore southpaw Charlie Griffith started and went the first four and a third innings, yielding one run on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts in the no-decision.

  • Sophomore lefty Jeff Radinsky retired all four batters he faced in relief, striking out a pair.

  • At the plate, first-year catcher Collin Pool went two-for-four with a double, a stolen base, and drove in the first three runs of the game for CWRU.

  • Graduate student designated hitter Eli Westrick was three-for-four at the plate with a double, a run, and an RBI.

  • First-year second baseman James O'Connor was two-for-five with a double, two runs, and an RBI.

  • Junior shortstop Nate Arterburn added two hits in four at bats, as CWRU collected 12 total hits in the game.

Highlights & Scoring Recap

  • The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the game with a pair of runs in the first inning. O'Connor led the game off with a single and moved to second on a one-out base hit by junior first baseman Tyler Stillson. After both runners advanced on a groundout, Pool plated both with a two-out single, putting the Spartans in front 2-0.

  • Westrick opened the third inning with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a groundout by Pool, extending the CWRU lead to 3-0.

  • The Spartans added on two more runs with two outs in the fourth, going ahead 5-0 after a run-scoring double from O'Connor and an RBI base hit up the middle from Westrick.

  • Mitchell scored a run in the fourth inning against Griffith, but that would be the only run he would allow in his outing, leaving the game after four and a third with a 5-1 lead.

  • CWRU remained ahead by four until the ninth, when the Mariners scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate, but sophomore Ayush Shetty notched a strikeout to end the game and record his first save of the season.

Spartan Notes

  • Saturday's game marked the eighth time through 14 games this season that the Spartans have had 10 or more hits. CWRU improved to 6-2 when getting at least 10 hits in a game.

  • With three more hits on Saturday, Westrick now has 196 for his career (the first 182 of which came as an undergraduate at Wooster).

  • Pool has now hit safely in each of the last six games he has played in. He is batting .394 with 10 RBIs this season.
