#20 CWRU Fall to Mitchell at Spartan Southern Classic on Wednesday

The 20th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team suffered an 18-1 setback to Mitchell College at the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Spartans dropped to 7-5 with the loss, while the Mariners improved to 3-3 following the victory.

Stats & Standouts


  • Junior designated hitter Tyler Stillson had two of the team's five hits in the game, including a pair of doubles. He drove in the Spartans' only run of the game with a fifth-inning double.

  • First-year third baseman James O'Connor, first-year catcher Collin Pool, and senior left fielder Thomas Downs also had hits in the game for CWRU.

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Cody Hughes made the first start of his career and went the first two and a third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. He suffered the loss to drop to 0-2 on the season.

  • Mitchell's Thai-ler Sestokas pitched 5.1 innings in relief to earn the victory and improve to 1-0.

  • Mitchell scored a run in the top of the first, added two in the third, and broke the game open with eight in the top of the fourth to go ahead 11-0.

  • CWRU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle was hit by a pitch, moved to third on an error, and scored on Stillson's double.

  • The Mariners added five more runs in the top of the sixth and capped off the scoring with a pair of runs in the ninth.

  • CWRU left 13 men on base during the game.

Spartan Notes


  • Gelle has now reached base safely in each of the eight games he has played in for the Spartans this season.

  • Stillson leads the team with 13 runs batted in this season.

  • Wednesday's game was the first-ever meeting between CWRU and Mitchell. The two teams will play each other again on Saturday morning in the teams' final game at the Spartan Southern Classic.

The Spartans have added a game and will now face Marietta College for a second time on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in Lexington.
