CWRU Bests Brandeis 73-67 to Close Out Throwback Weekend

Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Ethan Edwards scored 26 points and matched a school record with seven steals against his former team on Sunday afternoon, as the Spartans bested Brandeis University 73-67 to wrap up Throwback Weekend at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The Spartans returned to .500 with the win, improving to 10-10 with a 2-7 University Athletic Association record. The CWRU victory ended the Judges four-game winning streak, as Brandeis dropped to 13-7 overall with a 6-3 UAA record.

Stats and Standouts


  • Facing the team he competed for as an undergraduate student, Edwards made nine-of-19 shots overall, including three-of-eight from behind the three-point line, and converted each of his five free throw attempts. His seven steals marked the third time in program history a Spartan has reached that mark, and he added four rebounds.

  • Senior guard Anand Dharmarajan finished with 13 points, making five-of-nine shots from the floor and three-of-six three-point attempts.

  • Senior forward Andrew Fox came off the bench to score 12 points and collected six rebounds.

  • First-year forward Alex Vincent led the team with nine rebounds and two blocks to go along with six points, while first-year guard Shyam Patel matched his career-high with eight rebounds.

  • CWRU finished the game shooting 35.8% overall (24-67), 25.0% from three-point range (7-28), and 81.8% from the free throw line (18-22), while Brandeis made 34.8% of its shots (23-66), including 30.8% from long range (12-39). The Spartans also finished with advantages in rebounds (47-40), points from turnovers (16-8), points in the paint (34-20), second-chance points (22-14), fast-break points (13-8), and points off the bench (22-11).

First Half


  • The Judges led 6-2 early, but Edwards responded with seven unanswered points to give CWRU a 9-6 edge with 17:11 to play.

  • CWRU remained ahead until Brandeis tied the game at 18 apiece with 10:34 left in the frame and took a 20-18 lead with 10:12 on the clock.

  • Brandeis led by as many as nine points in the period, going ahead 33-24 with 6:42 left, but responded with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes, evening the score at 33-33 with 2:24 to go in the half on a layup by Vincent.

  • Brandeis scored five of the final six points of the period to go ahead 38-34 heading into halftime.

  • Edwards scored 16 points and added four steals in the first half of the game to lead the Spartans. CWRU finished the first 20 minutes with a 22-10 edge in points in the paint.

Second Half


  • Baskets by junior forward Logan Brown and Dharmarajan to begin the second half tied the score at 38-38 by the 17:46 mark. 

  • The Judges regained the lead with a two-pointer, but Dharmarajan responded with a three-pointer to put CWRU ahead 41-40 with 16:14 to play, giving the Spartans their first lead in nearly 15 minutes.

  • The teams continued to go back-and-forth, with Brandeis taking a 48-44 lead with 14:07 left before the Spartans scored six-straight to take the lead back, 50-48, with 11:42 left.

  • The game remained within a possession one way or the other until the Judges hit a jumper with 6:14 left to go up five, 62-57.

  • Edwards answered back with a three-pointer, and first-year guard Anestis Hadjistamoulou hit a pair of free throws with 4:36 left to tie the score at 62-62. A layup by Fox with 4:05 to go put CWRU ahead by a pair.

  • The Spartans' run continued, as CWRU scored 10 unanswered points to go ahead 67-62 with 3:31 left. 

  • Brandeis ended a five-minute scoreless stretch with a layup with 1:10 to play to make it a three-point game, but Fox hit all four of his free throw attempts in the final minute, and first-year guard Shyam Patel added two of his own with 3.4 seconds left to secure the win.

Spartan Notes


  • Edwards' seven steals tied the program's single-game record set by former Spartans Cole Frilling (against Adrian on December 3, 2021) and Sam Trunley (against Houghton on November 6, 2024).

  • Edwards has scored in double figures in 12 consecutive games for the Spartans, averaging 21.9 points during the stretch. He leads the team with 17.8 points per game this season, and Sunday marked his sixth game of 20 or more points this year.

  • Vincent notched two blocks on Sunday and has recorded at least two blocks in each of the team's last six games and nine total times this season.

  • CWRU improved to 33-29 all-time against Brandeis, and has won eight of the last 10 meetings.

  • The Spartans donned their Case Institute of Technology brown jerseys on Sunday as part of Throwback Weekend.
