Wearing their traditional Western Reserve University Red Cat uniforms to kick off Throwback Weekend at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Friday night, the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered an 89-75 loss to 25th-ranked New York University.
The Spartans dropped to 9-10 overall with the loss, including a 1-7 record in University Athletic Association play. The Violets improved to 14-5 with the win, including a 5-3 conference mark.

Graduate student guard Ethan Edwards led the team with 24 points, adding four rebounds, one assist, and a steal.

First-year forward Nitish Sankaranthi came off the bench to score seven points and lead the team with seven rebounds, both career-best marks.

CWRU shot 35.8% (24-67) overall, 31.3% (10-32) from three-point range, and 81.0% (17-21) from the free-throw line.

The Spartans finished the game with a 19-10 edge in points off turnovers, a 14-9 advantage in fast-break points, and a 26-21 bump in points off the bench.
First Half

First-year forward Alex Vincent scored the first basket of the game, but the Violets responded with 15 straight points to take control of the contest early.

First-year guard Shyam Patel made three-pointers on consecutive possessions and was fouled while knocking down the second one with 7:43 left, hitting the resulting free throw to cut the NYU lead from 22 points to 15, 28-13.

CWRU continued to chip away at the lead with a jumper by junior guard Julian Scott making it a 14-point game, 37-23, with 4:23 left in the half, and a pair of free throws by junior guard Drey Fox with 4:09 remaining making it a 12-point affair.

Edwards made three-pointers on two straight possessions for CWRU to trim the NYU lead to 43-32 with 1:47 to play in the half, and the Spartans headed into the break down 13 points, 45-32.
Second Half

NYU maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, taking a game-high 24-point advantage with 8:34 left to play in the contest.

A pair of three-pointers from senior guard Anand Dharmarajan helped CWRU cut the lead to 13 points by the 5:52 mark.

CWRU would get as close as 12 points down the stretch, but NYU held on for a 14-point win.

Vincent notched two blocks on Friday and has recorded at least two blocks in each of the team's last five games and eight total times this season.

Edwards has scored in double figures in 11 consecutive games for the Spartans, averaging 21.5 points during the stretch. He leads the team with 17.2 points per game this season, and Friday marked his fifth game of 20 or more points this year.
