#14 Baseball Opens 2026 with Doubleheader Sweep of Oswego State

Playing the earliest home-opening game in the history of Nobby's Ballpark, the 14th-ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team claimed a pair of wins over Oswego State on Friday afternoon, besting the Lakers 12-7 in the first game and 7-1 in the second contest.

The Spartans now stand at 2-0 on the season, while Oswego State dropped to 0-2.

Stats & Standouts


  • Junior Tyler Stillson had a huge impact both at the plate and on the mound. Over the two games as the designated hitter, he batted .750 (6-8) with two doubles, a triple, three RBIs, and a run scored. He was also the starting pitcher of game two of the doubleheader and struck out 10 batters over five shutout innings.

  • First-year second baseman James O'Connor made an immediate splash, batting .444 (4-9) with a team-high five RBIs and four runs, along with a pair of doubles.

  • Senior outfielder Matt Trout added four RBIs and was three-for-eight at the dish.

  • Senior outfielder Jasiah Harris, junior shortstop Nate Arterburn, and sophomore third baseman Calvin Gelle also had multiple-hit days for the Spartans on Friday.

  • CWRU hit .343 as a team with a .949 OPS during the day, while the pitching staff notched a 2.50 ERA with a .212 opponents' average.

  • The Lakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

  • CWRU got a run back in the bottom of the inning when O'Connor led off the frame with a double and scored on a one-out triple by Stillson.

  • Oswego State added two more runs in the top of the third to go ahead 6-1.

  • In the bottom of the third, Stillson doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Trout.

  • CWRU evened the score with a four-run bottom of the fourth. O'Connor drove in a pair with a one-out double, and Trout added a two-run double of his own with two outs in the frame to knot the score at 6-6.

  • In the bottom of the fifth, O'Connor added another two-out, two-run double to give CWRU its first lead of the day.

  • Senior right-handed pitcher Archer Stankowski entered the game in relief to start the top of the fourth and allowed just one unearned run on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts over five innings, picking up the win in the contest to improve to 1-0. He retired 10 batters in a row between the fourth and seventh innings, at one point striking out five-straight hitters.

  • Arterburn scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to extend the team's lead to 9-6. After Oswego State got a run back in the top of the eighth, CWRU scored three more in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Harris and a two-RBI double from Arterburn to go ahead 12-7.

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ayush Shetty pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.

  • Stillson went three-for-three with two RBIs in the second game and allowed just two hits and a walk in his five shutout innings on the bump. He faced just one batter over the minimum during his outing.

  • Junior right-handed pitcher Zach Barnes added three scoreless innings in relief, scattering four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

  • CWRU sent eight batters to the plate in the second inning and scored five runs. A Gelle single led to Harris scoring the first run of the game, and Gelle later crossed the plate when O'Connor reached on a one-out error. Arterburn later scored on a wild pitch to put CWRU up 3-0, and Trout followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-0. Graduate student first baseman Eli Westrick scored a run while Stillson got caught in a rundown, giving CWRU a five-run lead.

  • The score remained 5-0 until the bottom of the seventh, when O'Connor opened the inning with a single, Westrick doubled to right field to put two runners in scoring position, and Stillson plated them both with an opposite-field double to extend the team's lead to 7-0.

  • Oswego State would not score a run until getting on the scoreboard in the ninth.

Spartan Notes


  • Stillson's 10 strikeouts matched his career high from March 14, 2024, when he also struck out 10 batters against Oswego State.

  • The Spartans improved to 5-0 all-time against the Lakers with the two wins. CWRU has outscored Oswego State 59-18 over the five games.

  • CWRU head coach Matt Englander kicked off his 20th year at the program's helm by earning his 450th career win. He now stands at 451-298-3 all-time.

  • CWRU improved to 12-8 in season-opening games under Englander, and has now won five of its last six season openers. The Spartans are 15-4 in home-opening games under Englander, and have won 10 consecutive home openers, dating back to 2016.

  • Friday's games marked the earliest home-opening game in program history. Last season, the Spartans did not play their first game at Nobby's Ballpark until an April 4 contest against Emory.
