Two members of the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will compete for the 2025 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships in Claremont, California, starting on Saturday, May 24.
Junior Katalina Wang and senior Lily McCloskey will compete in the 16-team doubles draw, and McCloskey will also participate in the 32-player singles championship. McCloskey is appearing in the doubles championship for the fourth consecutive season while making her singles national debut. Wang has never been selected to the NCAA Championship prior to this season.
The Spartan partnership will face Kylie Schaefer and Raine Weis of Christopher Newport at approximately 6 p.m. ET on Saturday at the Biszantz Tennis Center on the campus of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps Colleges. The winner of the match will take on the winner of the matchup between Pomona-Pitzer's fourth-seeded duo of Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou and Brandeis's Bhakti Parwani and Rebecca Suarez in the quarterfinal on Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. Semifinal matches will be held on Monday at 4 p.m. ET with the national championship match scheduled for Tuesday, May 27 at 3 p.m. ET.
McCloskey and Wang will enter the championship ranked 24th nationally by the ITA. The duo, which was named to the All-University Athletic Association Second Team earlier this year, has gone 17-5 with a 5-1 record in tournaments. Schaefer and Weis, ranked 17th by the ITA, are 15-4 this season, defeating the Spartans 7-6 during a dual match in March. Markey and Zhou (13-5) are ranked fifth nationally by the ITA, and Parwani and Suarez went 13-2 this season.
A three-time All-American, McCloskey advanced to the quarterfinals in 2022 with former Spartan Hannah Kassaie, matching the furthest run by a Spartan duo. Alumnae Nithya Kanagasegar and Madeleine Paolucci reached the quarterfinals in 2018. McCloskey and Kassaie reached the round of 16 in both 2023 and 204.
McCloskey, an All-UAA First Team singles selection, will face Lane Durkin of Wesleyan in the first round on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET with a second round match to follow against the winner of the contest between third-seeded Olivia Soffer of Babson and Caitlyn Bui of WashU. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET with the semifinals on Monday at 1 p.m. ET and national championship match on Tuesday, May 27 at 1 p.m. ET.
She will enter the championship unranked in Division III by the ITA after appearing as high as 29th in the country earlier this season. During the 2024-25 season, McCloskey has a 15-8 record in singles matches, including a 6-2 mark in tournament play. Across her four seasons at CWRU, McCloskey is 56-30, winning the fourth most matches in program history. Soffer defeated McCloskey 6-3, 7-5 in a dual match in April.
Kassaie has the furthest run in program history in the singles championship, advancing to the quarterfinals in 2023.
