Case Western Reserve University sophomore thrower Toby Langsner earned All-University Athletic Association honors to lead the CWRU men's track and field team on the first day of the 2025 UAA Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium in Manhattan, New York, on Saturday.
Langsner threw the hammer 46.07 meters to place second in the hammer throw. It was the second All-UAA honor of his career after he finished second in the weight throw at the 2025 UAA Indoor Championships. Langsner added more points for the Spartans by placing sixth in the shot put with a heave of 13.15 meters.
Case Western Reserve added points in four events. Senior runner Aidan Nathan was fourth to cross the finish line in the 10,000-meter run at 31:24.60. Senior runner Luke Kishna placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:31.98. Last on the track, the 4x800-meter relay of first-year runner Donovan Crowley, first-year runner Brendan Bradish, senior runner Nate Gilbert, and sophomore runner Jacob Slater placed fourth in 7:49.43.
In the field, junior jumper Anthony DeCarlo tied for seventh in the pole vault after clearing 4.38 meters.
Five Spartans advanced out of preliminary heats on Saturday to race for a conference championship on Sunday by finishing in the top eight. In the 400-meter dash, first-year sprinter Madhan Manikandaswamy recorded the third-fastest time of 49.99 seconds, and first-year sprinter Charlie Stipanovich had the sixth-best time of 50.16 seconds.
CWRU also had runners advance to the finals in both hurdling events. Junior hurdler/sprinter Bryce Hodge had the fourth-best time in the 110-meter hurdles of 14.98 seconds, and in the 400-meter hurdles, junior hurdler/sprinter Josh Bates recorded the sixth-best time of 56.61 seconds and graduate student hurdler/jumper Yusuf Shaaban finished with the eighth-fastest time of 57.16 seconds.
The long jump and triple jump competitions were conducted at an alternate site late on Saturday evening with results not available until Sunday morning. The UAA Championships will conclude on Sunday with field events beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Spartan Notes
- After one day of competition, CWRU ranked fourth out of seven schools with 26.5 points. Carnegie Mellon had the most points with 73.0, followed by Chicago (53.0 points) and WashU (39.5 points). Trailing the Spartans are Emory (18.0 points), Brandeis (15.0) and NYU (6.0)
- Langsner's top three finish in the hammer throw was the first All-UAA placement by a Spartan in the event since Brian Holden placed third in 2019. Nick Heim was the last CWRU student-athlete to finish second in the event, which he accomplished at the 2015 Outdoor Championships
- Hodge recorded the third-fastest time in program history in the 110-meter hurdles with his preliminary effort on Saturday
