The fifth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip with three 7-0 wins on Sunday, besting the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Wittenberg University, and Piedmont College at the Lake Cane Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
The Spartans improved to 10-4 with the three wins.
CWRU opened the day with a pair of concurrent matches in the morning against Mary Hardin-Baylor and Wittenberg. In the 7-0 win against Mary Hardin-Baylor, the Spartans swept all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point as senior Casey Hishinuma and junior Anmay Devaraj bested Fernando Andrade and Marcus Diaz Torres 6-0 in the first match, juniors Rohan Bhat and Justin Prochnow defeated Eli Sam and Sam Rahm 6-3 at no. 2 doubles, and senior Ajay Mahenthiran and sophomore Santiago Salazar Garza claimed a 6-0 win over Barret Scott and Carter Celaya at no. 3 doubles.
The Spartans went on to sweep all six singles matches against Mary Hardin-Baylor. At no. 1 singles, Mahenthiran picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win against Diaz Torres, while junior Matthew Plunkett bested Andrade 6-0, 6-2 at no. 2 singles and Devaraj claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Celaya at third singles. In the fourth singles match, Hishinuma defeated Scott 6-0, 6-1, Salazar Garza topped Rahm 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles, and senior Ben Martin came away with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jason Blattner at sixth singles.
Mary Hardin-Baylor fell to 2-3 with the loss.
CWRU also swept the three doubles matches against Wittenberg. Sophomores George Kosseifi and Derek Shiffer defeated Jacob Bennett and Ethan Libby 6-2 at no. 1 doubles, sophomore Trey Lambright and first-year Rowan Matorin claimed a 6-0 win over Justin Hardie and Kyle Fout at no. 2 doubles, and first-years Leon Chen and Jon Totorica bested Benjamin Glassman and Andrew Garofoli 6-0 at no. 3 doubles.
Kosseifi went on to win 6-1, 6-1 at no. 1 singles against Libby and Matorin added a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Bennet at no. 2 singles. In the third singles match, Totorica won 6-1, 6-1 against Fout, while first-year Konrad Kwiatkowski claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win against Hardie in the fourth singles match. Rounding out the win, first-year Rohit Jain defeated Garofoli 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles and first-year Luke Saylor defeated Glassman 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.
Wittenberg dropped to 0-5 following Sunday's loss.
Wrapping up the first day of spring break against Piedmont, CWRU once again won all three doubles contests. Hishinuma and Mahenthiran were the first to finish with a 6-1 win over Yannick Wassmer Navarro and Charles Parnell 6-1 at no. 1 doubles, and Kosseifi and Shiffer followed with a 6-3 win over Amir Latipov and Simon Johnstone at third doubles to clinch the team point. Chen and Devaraj completed the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win against Leyton Dunn and Connor Phelps in the second match.
Lambright claimed the first singles win for the Spartans against the Lions, defeating Rohan Kavali 6-3, 6-3 at no. 6 singles to put CWRU ahead 2-0. A 6-2, 6-4 win from Prochnow against Phelps at fifth singles extended CWRU's lead to 3-0, and Bhat provided the clincher for the Spartans with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Bryce VanOrder at fourth singles.
Completing the sweep, Matorin bested Wassmer Navarro 6-2, 7-6 (3) at no. 1 singles, Kwiatkowski turned away Backeberg 6-2, 6-1 at no. 2 singles, and Totorica claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win against Parnell at no. 3 singles.
The loss dropped Piedmont's season record to 5-4.
The Spartans will continue their series of Spring Break matches on Monday at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Spring, Florida with matches against North Central College at 8:30 a.m. and seventh-ranked Emory University at 3:30 p.m.

CWRU raised its team singles winning percentage to .702 (160-68) for the season and its doubles winning percentage to .648 (68-37).

With his singles win on Sunday, Prochnow improved to 8-0 in singles matches this season and his eight-match winning streak is the longest active stretch by a Spartan.

Matorin has now won seven straight singles matches and leads all Spartans in singles wins this season with a 14-3 record.
